Creating Apps for Good in Computer Science

Year 9 girls have been working towards a nationwide competition, Apps for Good, in their Computer Science lessons. Bob Schukai, Senior Vice President, Identity Solutions at Mastercard, mentored them for the competition, and pupils discussed their  App development ideas in Skype calls with Bob, in the USA.   Simon Reid, Head of Computer Science, says: ‘It’s been a challenging task for the girls, to identify a real world problem they can all relate to, then design an App based solution for it. During the process, the girls have learnt to work together as a team, research their problem, conduct surveys, identify organisations and charities involved in their field, and communicate with tech experts.'  They are currently producing ‘wireframe’ barebone versions of their Apps, ahead of their final presentations.
